How big is your tank? A Dwarf Gourami shouldn't be kept in less than 10 gallons, and plants and other complex decorations are great as well. Keep it with fish like Tetras, Barbs (not Tiger Barbs), Rasboras, Cories, Kuhli Loaches, Otos, Danios, Minnows, Killifish, and smaller South American Cichlids. Your tank size will dictate the number and species of fish you can keep, so be sure to let us know. Email me if you have any questions.

EDIT: As the others have stated, you really shouldn't keep multiple male Gouramis together because of thier teritorial habits. If you had a well planted tank that was at least 30 gallons, you wouldn't have any problems with a pair of DWARF Gouramis.

Dwarf gouramis are usually good peaceful fish, but NEVER keep them in pairs. Just one gourami is fine. These fish are usually territorial to one another, and will fight and kill each other (not as fast as two male bettas would though). Plus, gouramis come from the same famliy as bettas, so this might be a reason for the aggression. Otherwise, these fish are peaceful towards other fish.

A dwarf gourami should be fine, assuming your tank is large enough. Like mentioned, only 1 gourami to the tank though, they can be aggressive and/or territorial to their own kind. I'm surprised you had a problem with your guppies, I had 3 males in a tank, they did pick on one a bit, but didn't kill each other. Other fish, it depends on what your tank size is, but tetras are good, lots of varieties with them-but usually need to be kept in groups of at least 3-5. The smaller barbs like cherry barbs are good, rasboras, again those need to be in groups as well.

Dwarf gouramis can make good additions to a community tank and their coloration can be very eyecatching, but they can be territorial and males may spar so it's probably best that only one would be housed in the tank. If you house it with guppies or other small bodied fish, keep an eye on them because it wouldn't be entirely out of question for a gourami to try munching on or bullying smaller tankmates.

I keep 6 gourami's in a 75 gal tank along with 4 huge angels, a pleco & a cory cat, plus 2 freshwater crayfish to keep the tank bottom cleaned up. All the gouramis ( 2 ,3-spot blues, 2 golds & 2 red fire dwarves all get along just fine & there are 2 males in the group. This tank has been up & running for over 2yrs. without incident.

Yes, you can have a dwarf gourami for your community tank, As far as tankmates, most peaceful tetras and cherry barbs can fit well. They can also fit with some livebearers. I would not advise you to get fish from the family anabantids since they are mostly closely related and may fight.
