A lot of men have this misguided notion that because a man is gay he must like ALL men. They fear that a gay man is going to be attracted to them. It's stupid and childish, but it's very common. Most women don't have this fear, even about lesbians. I, personally, could care less if a woman hit on me. I would turn her down the same way I would turn down a man.
I do think that in general men are more homophobic than women.

I think women are more secure with their sexuality. Masculity and the rigidness of it, men are very afraid of being seen as "gay", because now they would be "girly" or not masculine anymore. Femininity is much more flexible relative to this, because of societaly constructs. This is my opinion, but I think homophobic people have has some thoughts, arousals, or hidden tendencies. Because if one is so straight he or she would not be homophobic and would be secure regarding sex, but homophobic person is insecure.

I think it is true and it is true because for men gay is seen as a threat to their masculinity rather than just a sexual preference thing.
Gay men are still shown and seen as somehow not being "manly" in our society and too many people are influenced by that social signal.
For women yes there is the butch or bull dike image of lesbians but is is not as strong because we see many examples of women who like women and don't act like that.
And we see women who are strong and most of us we don't care who they prefer they are still a good example for girls.
Personally if a woman was attracted to me I wouldn't worry about it. If she is a nice person than I would be happy that she liked me. :)
Edit I just thought of this..also I can be friends with a lesbian and not have to worry about anything. I know that wouldn't be a problem for many men either but maybe this is a problem with some men?

I could only give you my own answer ( other people might disagree ). But here we go: I do not think it has to do with a gender, humans tend to react very differently within race, ethnic, religious and other backgrounds. The key is to have an open mind and treat every individual with respect. I also met quite a few very intelligent, well mannered and open minded individuals of both genders in my lifetime.

This is my opinion, but maybe because women are more open minded than men? Who knows! Of course that is just a generalization. Obviously, being homosexual is more widely excepted than it was 10, 20 years ago. I am a Christian, but I also believe that you can't help who you fall in love with.

I think its because women are more comfortable displaying and discussing their sexuality with members of the same sex then men are. Plus there is the stereotype that women feel comfortable around gay men because there is no sexual tension around them, like there is with most cross-gender friendships.
Also, Men are used to be the aggressive one, and women are used to being hit on. Men find the thought of being hit on uncomfortable by its self, let alone by another man.

I think a lot of men seem to have this irrational fear that gay men are going to hit on them and it's going to make them look "gay" as well.

That's an over-generalization. There are a lot of bigots from both sexes.
