This really bugs me! What do you think of it? I don't like it or understand it. Any info. would be appreciated! I think men and women are equals - unique and different but equal and extremely valueable! Doesn't this practice demean women?

If you live in a christian western society, Yes!! this is seen as degrading to women.
However, in the muslim arab society it is not seen as demeaning to women, but more as protection. A single women is not allowed to walk down the public street, she must be with another woman or her husband.
It is all a question of ethics. What the christian west sees as acceptable the muslim arab world does not. Conversely, what the muslin arab world sees as acceptable practice we in the west find it abhorrent.
When muslim arabs come into western society they must learn to accept western standards. Similarly, if we as christian westerners live in musllim arab society we must accept their standards, even though it may go 'against the grain' with us.
The old maxim still holds good - 'When in Rome do as the Romans'.

it is a show of respect. it doesn't really bother me, it is their way.a good Christian woman shows respect to her husband or she should. I don't walk behind my husband and he doesn't walk in front of me.we have respect for one another or try to anyhow:-)
