I don't know yet but I don't think that my preference will change much. I like skirts at my knee or a few inches higher or lower .. it's just my own preference. Sometimes I like a long skirt depending.
I like my legs a lot because they are long and I exercise but I dress for myself and what I'm comfortable with. I don't think that will change. :)

After reading the first several answers I wonder how ill informed some people can be.
I don't like skirts that hit me anywhere in the calf. I think they make ME look dowdy. I like knee length for work, if I wear a skirt, and I love wearing formals. However, even though I am in my 50's I wear shorter skirts when I feel like it. I bought a new dress yesterday thats about 2 inches above the knee. I exercise almost everyday so I have great legs, (I have danced since I was 2). I am also a size 4. So please don't generalize.

In Scotland, I see young girls wearing knee-length skirts with leggings, young adult women split equally between those who wear mini-skirts with leggings and those who wear ankle-length skirts. Most adult women wear knee-length skirts with stockings. That's not a progression from short to long with age. I think perhaps American culture holds that women should flaunt what they have while they have it but I would not call that a "woman's preference".

my preference has changed. I wear at least knee length skirts / dresses now. Mainly because of my job and the need to look more professional and less trashy.

Women's preferences in clothing change with age. It doesn't have anything to do with physical changes. It has to do with comfort, knowledge, maturity and self confidence. I have learned that if I want to really have a good time somewhere then I don't need to be worried about what I am wearing and who is looking at what. Also the clothes don't make the woman. See me for who I am not my sexy 50 year old legs. And yes they do still look good and can for many women. Look at Tina Turner. She is in her sixties. She still has good looking legs. So do I but don't feel the need to share them with everyone.

I've never noticed that with myself. I've never been comfortable with wearing short skirts. I don't really like wearing skirts that I have to constantly tug down on in the back every time I stand up or that I have to worry about showing my underwear everytime I sit down or bend over.

yes... mostly because we start to worry about how we look EVEN MORE (if that's possible) than when we were young.
as you get older your body shape changes and that brings on a lot of insecure feelings about oneself.... we just cant seem to help it! its a woman thing!
as well as that we (lucky lucky) women get the joy of childbirth and rearing... and somehow setting an example for our kids and younger people around us suddenly becomes an important thing!
what a crazy life!!!

Sometimes, because older people are discouraged from being 'fun and flirty'. They want wear respectful clothing that allows them to be taken seriously at work, etc. Also, when people reach a certain age, they often lose the urge to show off their thighs.

You tell me. When you are 20, you want all the attention you can get. Once you are 40 and have kids, you cant go around with a mini skirt especially with all the weight you put on when you have kids.
Would you wear a slinky little cocktail dress when you've got wrinkly legs? I know i wouldn't...
