Legal or not, do you know how to use it? If you don't, you'll be giving a weapon to whoever attacks you.

You could probably get away with carrying a knife like Mic Dundee of the movie Crocodile Dundee.... However you may not want to.
Knowing how to use the weapon you carry is more important than just carrying one. A good crook can disable your weapon from you unless you know how to use it.
Any pocket knife w 3" or less would be a great choice, because you can conceal it from the enemy until you need to use it. Generally if something is going to happen to a mother and children the guy wont bother using a weapon esp around a crowd.
Another good tool to use is a high powered mini light. Great for blinding the crap out of someone late at night!
Get to know your towns folk.... you'll feel safer. Oh and you do need to work on your fear issues as well. Living like that is terrible. You shouldn't even feel you have to ask this question really. I think most of it has to deal with your own misconceptions, or worked in fears as you grew up. FIND PEOPLE TO TRUST! Hope everything works out for ya.... Peace out chick!

In some states if the blade is longer than the palm of your hand the knife is illegal...but that's kind of a ridiculous rule when you think about it because a giant man could end up having a massive knife that would be considered legal.
It does however sound like you may have some social anxiety disorders. Try to be less paranoid, maybe carry some mase or pepper spray as a opposed to a knife, it may give you some sense of security.

I really don't think a knife will help. Weapons get turned against us so easily because we aren't trained in defense, how to use them, and are not strong enough to overcome the attack. Plus you'll be wanting to protect your kids and you can't attack when trying to defend your children.
Instead I recommend signing all of you up for tae kwan do classes. You'll learn how to defend, how to spot an attack, and how to defeat opponents bigger and stronger than you are. You and kids will all be learning this.
I think you may also benefit from an anti anxiety pill and counseling. The tae kwan do will also help the helpless/not safe feelings as well.

No offense, but it sounds like you might benefit from some therapy. You seem to have A LOT of anxiety. Seriously...I'm not trying to be mean. I'm in therapy, too so that's why I recommend it. You are teaching your kids to be afraid of everything. You can't go through life being terrified of every shadow. Instead of a knife, why not have you and your kids take a self defense class together? That way, you could enjoy your life, but have the skills to protect yourself, too. I wouldn't keep a knife around my kids.....same as a gun. Kids will find it and "play" with it.

I'm not sure about your specific region (as laws vary from state to state), but my law states that I am allowed to carry a blade for my protection, provided that the blade is under 5.5'' in length, and that it's not a switchblade.
You mentioned something about being in Texas. Read this: http://pweb.netcom.com/~brlevine/tx.txt ...that should help you out. Oh, and mace (pepper spray) is always an effective, non-violent alternative.

The knife isn't going to help you... You need to work on your "worry" or fear based thought process. If you think negative and let that transpire in to believing that negative will happen, then you have just manifested it in to your life. Stop being so paranoid and stay away from horror movies...
