We typically don't know who the true leaders are until history is written about them. Say in 20yrs we find out that Hussein had shipped WMD's to syria before inspectors and US troops arrived, and that he had planned a genocide on the Kurds. Bush looks like a leader in the History books. I'm not saying that's what happened, just giving an example.

They're out there, they just get overlooked because they did something wrong fifteen years ago, made a wrong statement, and looked at someone funny and was thought of as a racist, even though the real quote had nothing to do with race.
The Media and people tear candidates apart so much there's no way the good leader would even want to run for office. Not many people want their entire life scrutinized under an electron-microscope and survive with their sanity intact.

I think yes, but you can not compare the leaders of now to the ones you read about in history books. The leaders of today are making huge decisions and are judged now, those in history books have withstood the test of time and there decisions proved to be good. At the time many of the great leaders we know today from history were not seen as great during their own times.

I think that there are. I think that they are weeded out by our political process. A good many of our leaders serve first in legislatures. In order to accomplish anything they must compromise endlessly. The same qualities that make a good leader in our eyes (unflinching character, stands on principals, honest, uncompromising ethics) make an ineffective politician. If they won't compromise then they won't get their legislation passed. If they won't deal with favors from people prone to call them then they won't receive campaign donations to be re-elected. Our system insures that real leaders never make it through the lower ranks.

John McCain can lead and he is very familiar with wartimes. He is an experienced Senator and a decorated soldier. His credentials are the best in the nominees for the presidency in 2008. None of the other nominees whether democrat or republican can stand up to John McCain. The man is already a legend because of his service to our country. Two Admirals in his family and we just pass him up and pick people who wouldn't even make a pimple on McCain's behind. We don't want the best for this country, because we pick the Hollywood glory guy who talks good and did nothing.

I saw something about this how we are lacking leaders that inspire. I may heard this on a talk show radio program.
I don't think we have any. It's pretty sad. I don't know why. It takes real courage and conviction. Of course it could be because a lot of them seem to get assasinated. (Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., JFK)

that depends on what you consider a good leader, there are many around in the world, those who take action where action is needed not because focus groups have indicated its safe to do so but simply because its the right thing to do, ofcorse no one will appear to be a good leader when the opposition its willing to smear there name and character for the soul purpose of maintaining their own power,
and in our country both sides are willing to cripple a good person, to prevent them from making their own party look bad

I think many leaders today miss the point. The idea of Leadership is to create more leaders, not followers.

I'm afraid that there aren't many left and those that are left aren't running for office.
You can forget reading about them in history books as well unless you have access to books that accurately reflect history. None of which can be found in schools today.

There are real leaders left. They're just not in the US government, nor what's left of the civil rights movement.
