I'm not really a Van Halen fan, but Jimi Hendrix isnt really a shredder at all so the answer to ur question is van halen, but i'd say jimi hendrix is a better guitarist.

Van Halen is fast as lightning. But not very original. Hendrix was an innovator, soulful and driving at the same time.
Just in terms of shred, I'd have to say Van Halen. But in terms of pure artistry, Hendrix has it all over him.

Eddie Van Halen is a genius with a guitar. Hendrix is awesome, but Van Halen's overall sound is better. I mean, Hendrix's songs all sortof sound...the same, you know? Van Halen went through so many artistic phases; there's something for everyone!

Jimi is about to rise from the dead and smack you about the head for even thinking about him as a shredder. Putting a label on an artist that didn't exist when the artist was alive ruffles some feathers. A lot of your answers already point to innovation and soul versus technical prowess. I'm happy to leave it at that as well. Keep in mind the advances technology made between the two guitarists' primes. Would be interesting to see how Eddie would have fared back in the Sixties.
Victoria - if Jimi sounds "all the same" to you, you aren't listening to enough of his offerings, seriously.

dude check out the my space for JAKE E LEE watch the clips of him solo on it .. he is a real shredder .
