Actually prophetic interpretation is more likely, but synchronicity helps if it can be shoehorned into the symbolism of prophecy.

Short memories/retroactive idealization is also a factor. Religious types always say things are worse now than ever, there's more war and sin and natural disaster than ever before. They're simply ignorant of how horrible things were before they were born.
