Are managers allowed to deny an employee vacation time? It is a commissioned job in a medium sized company.

It's not me, but the trip is mid-December and the guy has been at the company a little over 3 months (?) and gave plenty of notice. Office is slow that time of year and is staffed with enough people that even if 5 people were off it wouldnt be a big deal.

it is a recruting firm and anyone can cover for anyone else, and they do on a regular basis. And the manager just took a vacation. The guy was told he could have 2 days but any longer and he would have to sever his ties with the company. It is his family Christmas vacation and has been paid for for 5 months

It is very unusual to have vacation after three months of employment unless this was part of the new hire package that was negotiated.

A company has the complete right to approve or deny any vacation request for any or no reason at all.

Vacation is not covered by Federal Law

If he's in the US, vacation is optional for the employer to provide, not mandated by federal law.

It's highly unusual that someone would be entitled to a week vacation after having been on the job 3 months. If he just asking for a short leave of absence? That too would be at the discretion of the employer.

Depends on if you signed a contract. If not, you are not guaranteed any vacation whatsoever in America thanks to the corruption and hatred being flung from the Republican party. In France, you are required, by law, to take at least 4 weeks of paid vacation every year. In Germany it's at least 2 weeks. The Republicans are starting to win the argument that if we want them to bring the jobs back here from China, then we have to be just like the Chinese workers/slaves.

if the office is extremely busy or a deadline needs to be
met then you they can deny vacation. Anyone else on
vacation at the same time? Did you give proper notice?

Sometimes vacation (and other benefits) don't begin until after 1 year of employment. Maybe he overlooked that in all the hiring paperwork?

There are no manditory vacation laws in the states like there are in Europe.

They won't keep many employees with a policy like this but there is nothing illegal about it.
