Having problems with my laptop mic input, help>?

I was able to use my laptop's mic input with a mic the other day, now when I tried to get it to work it didnt produce a signal, even with an instrument pluged straight in. ANynoe have ideas why? I checked everything and all seems to be working fine.

Ok, the input on either line in or mic, are working just fine BUT, when I try to monitor what I am recording I cannot hear a thing UNLESS, after I have recorded the wave and in play back is the only time I hear what I had recorded.
