The general consensus is Eclipse, 3000GT, and Lancer Evolution.
Three different categories (much like Honda). The Eclipse would be the every day driver. A good, well-rounded vehicle that can get you where you need to go in a hurry.
The 3000GT is the sports car of the company. Very fast, very agile, and all wheel drive. With the VR-4 package, you get the all wheel drive and twin turbos. Yes, definitely Mitsubishi's sports car.
The Lancer Evolution is in many respects the mixture of the two. Not only do you get the infamous 4G63T engine (which DSM used in the Eclipse, Talon, and Laser engines of the early 1990's), but you get the spacious room of the Eclipse as well. It is the grocery getter, the taxi, and the weekend track car all in one.
I personally believe the Lancer Evolution is Mitsubishi's best car all around. All wheel drive, turbo, enough room to move, does well in any weather, and gets you where you need to go in a hurry.

For a few years it was the Lancer actually.
Before that it was the GTO/3000GT (Dodge Stealth).
Now its back to being the Eclipse. Luckily this works out for sedan people to. The Eclipse is closely related to the Galant (previously the GTO was) which in turn is a sister product to the Dodge Avenger and the Chrysler Sebring.
Their years working on the Lancer (during the sad days of the 01 era Eclipse--the first one with a V6) yielded great things for the next Evolution and helped out the Jeep Compass, Jeep Patriot, Mitsu Lancer and Outlander, and a few other cars.
__
Edit: from what Ive seen the latest additions to the Lancer were mostly things looked into for the new Eclipse that got shifted downward.

They've played around a lot with the 3000GT/GTO and the Eclipse, but they've kept a good pace on improving the Lancer Evolution. If you're going to buy a Mitsubishi car, get yourself anywhere from a Lancer Evo VII on up to a Lancer Evo X.

as far as the history of Mitsubishi yes they did have American prisoners. Henry ford was an anti-Semite vw well let's see the bug was designed by Hitler. If we dwell on what company's did during war time we can't buy any products.

IMHO Mitsubishi currently has 2 flagship vehicles...
The Lancer (N. America & Globally) and the Pajero/Montero (Globally but not N. America) are their two flagship vehicles.
The Eclipse is a great vehicle and a lot of focus is being paid to it now because it was recently redesigned (great design BTW).

I disagree completely with your assumption that car makers only concentrate on one model and ignore the rest.
But as far as Mitsubishi is concerned the Lancer EVO has always been their STAR car. But that doesn't mean they ignore all the other cars in their line up.

The Eclipse is an excellent motorized vehicle. I personal 2, both are Spyder and both will very last a lengthy time period because I have a tendency to the fluids, appreciate the automobile and what it would want to do, keep it purifier than the subsequent guy and characteristic delight in possession. the foremost the following is the fluids. replace the oil each and every 2 to three thousand miles, that Eclipse will do you accurate for years and tens and tens of thousands of miles.
