can non-hardening modeling clay be baked to make it permanently hard? Or is there any other way to make the clay hard? Freezing lasts until it gets warm again.

If it's true "modeling" clay, it can never be hardened because it has a wax in it that would just make it melt if heated.

Some people use the term "modeling clay" loosely though, so if it's not a polymer clay (Fimo, Premo, Sculpey, Kato, Cernit) and it's not an air-dry clay of some kind, and it's sold primarily for kids, it's probably the type I was speaking of.

The only things you might be able to do to preserve it would be to take a photograph of it, put it under a display case or up on a shelf so it wouldn't get squished, or firm it up (cooling, etc.) then make a mold of it with a polymer clay or other non-shrinking clay. If polymer clay, cure the mold then cast an air dry or polymer clay in the mold.

(I don't know what would happen if you tried to coat it with several layers of acrylic sealer though (let dry thoroughly between coats) ... that might firm up the outside of the object, but don't know if it would work well with stress and time; might be worth trying on a small scrap piece though to find out.)

Sorry!

no, you can't bake a modelling clay to make it hard. it will melt like candle wax! buy a polymer clay instead. it can be oven-baked. Google sculpey or fimo, these are top polymer clay brands.
