Lol I agree. My school was much nastier - you were more likely to get beaten up because of your race, appearance etc than your name! Noone ever got "picked on" because of their name at my school either.
Besides when you consider that a child only spends a few years out of their life at school I think its ridiculous to disregard a classic and good solid which name you like "in case" some stupid little playground Hitler decides to pick on your child. Teach your kid some damn respect for who they are and where their name comes from and teach them how to swing a good left hook! Bullies won't try it again . . .
I mean, kids get picked on at school for all sorts of reasons - bullies will ALWAYS find something to pick on. If its not your name it will be something else.
We chose an "underused classic" for our son's name - he's called Arthur. I have been told by various people that he "might" get "teased" at school because his name will be unusual and all the other little boys will have more fashionable names like Connor, Jack, Joshua, Luke, Rhys etc. Well firstly he will be taught respect that his name is partly in honour of our family members (his great grandad and my great uncle) and partly in honour of his cultural heritage (King Arthur, King of the Britons. My son is Welsh/English). And then he will be taught a little basic self defence so when some fat spotty little moron decides to "laugh" at his name the little moron will find themselves on their backside before they can blink.

I think it's true that children can be teased regardless of their name. And I also agree that you shouldn't necessarily rule out a great, actual name simply because you think someone, somewhere *might* find it tease-worthy. After all, there are plenty of culturally-based names or even underused classics that are perfectly lovely, even normal, names, but that some might see as odd or unusual choices. But that doesn't make them any worse than Jacob or Emily. ;)
So while I think that comments along the lines of "Great ... if you want him/her to be mercilessly teased!" are often tossed about rather randomly -- just as likely for a misspelled Jaidynn, trendy Madison or classic Charlotte LOL -- I do think there is some merit in at least considering how a name might affect your child.
In other words, if people are saying a certain name will be cause for ridicule simply because it's too "old-fashioned" for their taste, I think it's safe to assume they simply have a more (ahem) "modern" style and reassure yourself that timeless classics or even less familiar, but equally real, names are actually quite popular at the moment. No cause for alarm. ;)
On the other hand, if they're trying to point out that a name is obviously -- and poorly -- created or so misspelled as to be grammatically impossible, certainly worth a second thought. Because while a classic name will rarely be looked down upon by teachers, employers, etc. (whether it's their personal style or not), something like Lil'eigh-Shauwernn (said Lily Cheyenne LOL) or Layzz'r most definitely will be. ;)
So the "teasing" comments themselves? Often ignorable. But the REASONS for them could certainly warrant some serious thought. Especially if a number of people are mentioning it for the exact same reason.
Hope that helps!

I work in schools and yes you do hear childrens names being used in silly rhymes. Generally though it is not just because of their name its when they are not getting on with another child for another reason. I have known popular children who's names you would think are easy targets never have their name made fun of, while other children with what seems like a relatively safe name have it used against them. If a child wants to pick on another child they will generally use anything they can think of including names.

Kids are cruel. If they can't make something out of your name, they'll take the mick with something else. You obviously don't want to do what somebody at my school did (Russell Sprout...oh yes it IS true!) but if you want Brian, and they call him BRAIN there's not much you can do about that. It was my surname they used against me .. and there wasn't much anybody could do about that. The name was fine... it was what the dirty minded little so-an-sos did with it!! Be sensible, but follow your dream. If you want a name.. go for it.

Really ? Kids in my school got picked on all the time cuz of their names ! Poor Gaylord probably cant enter a playground to this day . or if it rhymes with a gross word or body part like Peg Leg Meg or Shane the Brain but should it influence the naming of your baby - nah , mean kids will find a way to pick on other kids they'll make up a name if they have too

You just want to make sure that the initials dont spell a dirty word or that the name isn't so funny that people giggle when they hear it. We have a Dr Butcher, A Sophia Cushion and a Richard Head in our town. Someday this child may be president of a huge corporation or even the United States so a name is a very important thing to have to go through life with.

I think some people are overthinking things. I was teased unmercifully at school, but that was for being nerdy, not my name. I knew a girl named Jill that got teased by a boy named Gemon (rhymed with Lemon). Kids are just cruel, and they'll pick on each other no matter what you name them. Now, some names are just begging for it, though, like Baal, Gaylord, Prince, Dick, Precious, Astrid, Harry, or Le'Magnifique (a local birth announcement: I nearly cried). So it they're telling you to skip Steven because they'll call him Stinky Stevie, ignore it.

ik! I am in 6th grade, last year of Elem. School, and I was never teased, or seen anyone get teased for a name in my grade! Only one girl ever got tease in my grade (when kids were actually mean, not joking nicely), and her name was Elish, but her name was not the reason. She was a over-dramatic brat! Also, I am a "safety" which means I bring first graders to the bus, and from the bus, and I see that no first threw 5th graders are made-fun of because of Names. there is even a girl name Surihasa (sp?, Sir-e-haw-ss-uh) who is popular in fourth grade!

I believe that if your child is going to get picked on, it will, the name won't be the cause (although it may be used in the teasing).
I do think that employers et cetera will be influenced by really stupid names.
I am going to pick a name I like and I one which I hope the child won't hate!

Yeah I pretty much think ppl are over doing it. I don't think the whole getting picked on it school because of your name thing really happens anymore. There are so many unique and odd names and variations of names out there that this generation of kids doesn't really think any name is weird. Some ppl are even going as far as translating names into different languages. telling you don't name your kid this cuz it means this in spanish. If that were that case all names would be off limits. It depends on what the person likes and believes in. Look at celebs. They name their kids all kinds of names and I'm sure they get along just fine at school.
