I've fallen in love with this wedding dress: http://www.davidsbridal.com/bridal_gowns_detail.jsp?stid=2288&prodgroup=127
Problem is i don't want to wear a sleeveless or see-through sleeve. I don't know how to sew, but the store will put a see-through sleeve on the dress for me, like this:

My question:
If I had the store do all the alterations and add the sleeves, could I go to a seamstress and have this sheer sleeve lined with plain white satin?
Or would I be better off buying the dress without the sleeves and going to a seamstress to completely add sleeves?

The sales woman at the store mentioned that they have customers, who for religious reasons, request a "build up" to the dresses - - where full sleeves are often added.

To Mama's note - the wedding is in October 2009. I'm allowing more than enough time to ensure it would be finished, and to my liking.
I tried on the dress with a wrap and a bolero jacket - - both, to me, covered up how pretty the dress is.

The reason they want you to have a sheer sleeve is that it's nigh unto impossible to match a solid sleeve fabric to a dress that's already made.

You could have a dressmaker make an entire dress from scratch so that the sleeve fabric will match the dress fabric. Show them both pictures so they can see that the edge of the sleeve is lined up with the side front seam of the dress, and it is very do-able. That embroidery is not really embroidery. If you zoom in, you can see that it's factory-made lace with the background cut away. It would be applied after your final fitting. http://whozatvoice.com/dress1.jpg

But I would be leary of trying to buy sleeve fabric to match a store-bought dress.

I think you are buying into unnecessary stress.
Rather than trying to put sleeves where there are none, why not consider a shawl, shrug, etc. It could be tacked into place using long threads to allow movement. Or, why not fasten in the front, and remove it during the reception?
Wedding days are very stressful. The very last thing I would want to worry about is if the seamstress will get the gown finished on time, and if it will look as desired.
Congratulations and have a wonderful day!

Go to a seamstress it would be very difficult to add a lining to a sleeve that was already inserted...the thing is though, because the bust of the dress is in a corset style it may look a bit odd with proper sleeves on it. My advice is to visit some very good seamstress's with the pic before you buy the dress and ask what they can do.

Print the picture and take to a seamstress FIRST, before you order the dress. You might be surprised how expensive it will be to have it (and other alterations) done. Or even if a seamstress will do it. Your seamstress will tell you which is better, or easier for her to work with.

p.s. the dress is Gorgeous!
