I use abbreviations and slang A LOT when I'm typing on the internet (I won't here though lol). I am a great writer and did excellent on my writing and grammar on the SAT. I do it because I like to just type and not have to think about what I'm typing. If I'm typing to my friends or some person on the internet, who cares? Paying attention to every minute detail makes me feel like I'm typing a paper for school or something. It's one case if a person doesn't know how to spell correctly and does it but it's another when they're just having a casual internet convo(I did it!) haha

I believe it's a combination of laziness and educational failing. I really think our young people of today are not challenged enough educationally. Makes one wonder what's in store for us 10 years down the road.

While there does seem to be a certain amount of blame that can be laid at the feet of the current school system, my personal choice for "spelling monsters" are text messaging and the internet. I also place a lot of blame on these impersonal communications systems for the decline in manners and conversational etiquette. That's my "2 cents".

Well many people do not know how to spell anymore and spell check doesn't always work either. For example: I no too people who lack two do everything together. Spell check will pass it even though it's horrible. That's computer English for you.

I've been noticing it too. I think it's got to do with a smaller emphasis on spelling and grammer in schools. However, I also think that the internet is another culprit because of instant messenger spellings like tlk for talk and u instead of you.

I do know how to spell although I sometimes make mistakes. I have however seen questions here that I could not make out at all. People think it's fun until they need to spell and can't.

I think it's mostly because of technology. I myself have come to rely on AOL to correct all my spelling mistakes. It's horrid. We really should go back to lovely hand written letters. It would also be good practice for our brains, which are getting lazy!!!
