You should complain, if the management doesn't care about the employees or the customers. you should. Sound like its time for a new job

you really ought to avoid broken fluorescent tubes because they do contain a small amount of mercury vapor. I'm not sure what sort of smell that entails, but I imagine it's probably not that obvious. If there is an odor, then there is probably some other problem - faulty wiring? rodent corpses? who knows.. it really wouldn't be a bad idea to have it investigated further.. failing that, go find yourself a different job with better management and working conditions.

Perhaps its not the lights that smell but the electrical wiring. I have never heard of flourescent lights emitting an odor so it may very will be something else in the building. If it is as bad as you say I cant imagine that even management wouldn't object to working in a smelly environment.

I think fluorescent lights contain neon gas. I'm not sure if it's harmful or even wether it smells or not. It's unreactive and there's a small amount in the atmosphere anyway (about 0.0003% i think) so it shouldn't harm you.

There isn't any way a fluorescent light can give off a smell. Must be something else.

I say try and find out what the lights are made out of, and if it is harmful to your health. Try wiki or a google search.

Hope this helps!
