you can't saw through a penny ,but you can drill through one with a very small drill bit.You need a power drill and a small drill bit.Correction on saying you can't saw through one you can but it will basically be no purpose to saw through one if your making a whole for one. Stick with drilling a small hole through it make the whole just big enough to fit your string through it.

It is illegal to damage money but generally pennies are over looked... unless it is excessive.

What you could do as an alternative is are find professionally made braces that go around the out side edge of the coin and then screw down on them and have a hole in that for a chain to pass through. They are usually made for larger coins but I think you should be able to find them for penniess.

You could also tie wire (they make copper and colored wires and sell them at craft stores) around the penny so that it is like a package or a cage and leave a twist at the top for a chain. There is a link below to show you what I mean about the wire.

Good luck! It sounds neat!

Sawing sounds alittle excessive for what you're planning... I HAVE sawn pennies on my miniature scroll saw (modellers tools).

What you want to get is a drill with a small carbide bit expressly for drilling through METAL. You might also want to build a "Jig" or pattern so that you drill all the holes the same way.

ALSO... ALWAYS wear safety glasses when working with power tools or materials that shed ANY slivers, chips, dust, etc. I know far to many folks who've lost sight or suffered short-term injuries.

GOOD LUCK AND BE SAFE !!

Yes you can drill through a penny. YOu can have them flattened with an impression at Universal Studios in Orlando.

I am going to drill holes in those I got there and put them on a charm bracelet.

No you can not saw a hole in a penny. You can drill a hole through a penny. But it is against the law because it is defacing government property.

United States currency and coinage are governed by federal law through the U.S. Treasury Department. Generally, it is illegal to fraudulently deface, mutilate, impair, diminish, falsify, scales or lightens any coins minted or "coined" in the United States or any foreign coins which are by law made current or are in use or circulation as money within the U.S. (18 U.S.C. 331)

You wouldn't be able to saw it but as many have mentioned you could drill through it. And just so we can clear some things up. It's not illegal to damage money in the US unless you are doing it to "fraudulently deface". Don't damage money to turn a profit.

you will need an electric drill or dremel, (or a hand drill if you are that way inclined...)

however, i should point out that destroying money is illegal in most countries
