If it was me I would either go with an animal that is an extreme amount of trouble or something that is just odd.

-Amur Leopard: only about 30 left in the wild and they are a BEAUTIFUL cat
-Some species of shark: they are having massive problems with shark numbers dropping due to finning and bi-catch, plus there is a high number of interesting facts about them... look into the way hammers and bonnet heads hunt
-There are elephants that live in the desert of Namibia
-African Wild Dogs: highly endangered and are insane hunters
-Bonobos: they are a pygmy chimp that is endangered, not too many zoos in the US have them so it can be something rare to see and learn about

Leeches are very interesting and unpopular, though they really do no harm.
They look like worms but have a mouth like a lamprey. They bite and drink blood from their hosts, but it's not painful, doesn't itch, and doesn't spread disease. They are not as bad as mosquitoes.
They have been used medicinally, and they are still in some cases.
They have a natural anesthetic and a natural anticoagulant in their mouths to make their feeding easier, and so studying them could lead to more medical advances.
But almost everybody thinks they are really gross.
Salt water leeches don't bite humans.
