I respect anyone who volunteer to fight in the war to fight for their country. But I was wondering, why don't we send criminals out there to fight in wars? What do you think about giving that as a sentence instead of going to jail? Would it depend on the crime? I feel that at least they will be fighting for a cause and not sitting in jail for free. Once they serve their term in the war which mean they paid their debt to society and they can become citizens again. I believe it will also prevent less crime in the US if they sentence criminals to go to war. Do you know of any countries that does this?

To don c, sorry to disappoint but I'm not a Republican. I'm an Independent. My point is, why sacrifice decent/good people to fight in a war where there are people in jail that kills over here and gets out and kills again...the cyclce continues.

Actually, you guys are reading too much into this. A lot of people thinking that they wouldn't be trained, why can't they be trained? I understand that it's honesty that we look for in a solider. So are people saying that they what them to rape, kill, cheat, and steal over here while they are not really getting punished in "jail", then for them to serve a purpose?

Because they are more undisciplined than your ordinary recruit, and cannot be depended on to exercise self-control when heavily armed. The idea has been tried in this country in an informal manner, where judges used to offer a person on trial the option of jail or enlistment; but the military is not asking for that, probably fearing disciplinary problems.

Criminals (and ex-criminals) are more likely to be risk-takers. This is why some of them volunteer to be smokejumpers who fight forest fires (during their sentences), or, in one program run by a former Navy diver, oil rig divers (after their sentences).

The only thing I wouldnt agree on that for is... Soldiers are honorable and it wouldnt be right to put criminals in the same class as the honorable men and women that fight for out country. I also wouldnt want to be fighting alongside a bunch of child molesters and murderers

because we do not have extradition agreements with every country. Sending a criminal overseas would setting them free to perhaps never be imprisoned again and then our problems would become the problems of the waring country.

Great idea in theory but immpossibel to carry out.

I see where you are coming from but there is a brotherhodd between servicemen/women. Each one has to stand in a war zone confident that they will lay down their lives and protect one another. I think that if you sent criminals in than that means that there will be a lack trust and respect for one another and all hell will break loose.

The problem is discipline. Soldiers need it and if they had it in the first place chances are they wouldn't be in jail.

You think they would be good cannon fodder but those type of wars are not being presently fought.

Because I wouldn't want criminals:

1) Wearing a uniform of honor which I earned,
2) Carrying a weapon, and
3) Watching my back.

If you make the profession of arms something to which a criminal can be sentenced, you've just spat upon the service of every volunteer member of our services.

So lemme get this straight. You want to take convicted felons, place a gun in their hands (or even MORE fire power), send them halfway around the world, let them go and expect them to put their lives on the line and fight FOR us??? What planet are you from? What is their motivation?? How would you supervise them?? It's a ridiculous plan.

We do this already, in a way. In some states (and depending on the judge), it's either prison or military service. Needless to say, they make TERRIBLE soldiers/airmen, for the most part.

Study history...

England sent criminals to Australia to remove them from their
society, but they are unreliable without excessive supervision...
