I've never drank breast milk but I have dabbed it on my finger before and it tasted sweet so I left it at that. Well I pumped and froze a bag of it about a month ago and decided last night to give it to the baby- well he won't take a bottle so I put it in a cup and he made a weird face- so I decided to try it. I took a big sip and it tasted sweet at first and then it tasted so disgusting that I couldn't bring myself to swallow it- I had to spit it out. It tasted kind of how dried breastmilk smells. Ok has anyone ever experienced this before? I'm thinking maybe I didn't freeze it the correct way. I did what the box said it- put the milk in squeeze out and air zipper it up both times. I put it in our regular freezer in the ice compartment. Did I do something wrong? Was that freezer burn or how the milk actually tastes?

You have high levels of lipase (enzyme which breaks down fat in milk) in your breast milk. The more lipase, the quicker the milk goes off, even if it's in the freezer. There is nothing you can do to decrease the lipase, but scalding it will help. I had this problem too. My little boy wouldn't drink it unless it was freshly expressed. I tasted it, it was rank! I ended up throwing out loads of milk from the freezer. What a waste. It's fine now that I scald it before freezing.

When you breast feed anything that you eat the baby can taste throught the milk. It may been when you pumped it, you had eaten something bitter and the taste of it was there still. I have never tried to taste my breast milk LOL! So I dont know what its supposed to taste like... it may have been freezer burnt too... make sure your freezer isnt as cold as it can possibly go, this will cause things in it to freeze faster and more solid, essentially putting ice crystals into everything, even a sealed bag...When I stored breastmilk I always put it at the lowest setting... good luck.

hmm... sounds like it may have been freezer burned... perhaps the bag had a little hole in it or maybe it wasn't zipped totally...

can you pump some now and taste it fresh to compare? I actually took a good sip of mine... so I had something to compare it to if I ever had this problem... and I'm glad I did, because we had some in my parent's freezer as back up and the date had rubbed off... so I had to taste it to see if it was ok for my mom to use it while I was out that night!! it was nasty!!! I had to go back home and get some of my more recent stuff to leave them.

It depends on alot of different things, how did you thaw it out? I never was a big fan of freezing my breast milk, I would refrigerate it for 2-3 days at the most, and sometimes even that I couldnt get my kids to take. I personally dont like the bags. I like the medella plastic containers best. Im sure its nothing wrong that you did just normal, Been frozen taste....

You might have to put a new box of baking soda in the freezer to absorb other food flavors... Your breastmilk may have absorbed flavors in the freezer.. Milk products do that.. So, in the future freeze your breastmilk in the milk storage bags and put them inside another container or even a ziploc storage bag as a barrier... good luck

NOT how breast milk tastes! (don't ask!) It was spoiled milk you had. Not really sure how to freeze it. I have supplemented with formula if one of kids had to go to a sitter.
