90 cents an hour, for Kresge's, forerunner of K-Mart. But then again I was 19 in 1962, and my college tuition then was $150 per semester for full-time, plus I figured $50 a semester for books, so it's no way comparable to now.

An 18 year old would probably get minimum wage or not much above that unless he or she had some special skills for the job.

Every job is different. I suggest sales as a way to maximize your earnings without a degree. If you're not afraid of work, you can do very well in sales.

I don't have a degree and do quite nicely for myself. Supporting a household of 4 adults, 2 kids, 3 dogs, and a mortgage.

When I was 18, minimum wage was $2.65 an hour and my first job paid minimum wage.

As for "fair", there is no "fair". It depends on the company, job and the employee.

If you don't like the pay, don't take the job.
