A person touches a stove, withdraws his/her hand and yells. Why does the yelling occur after the hand is withdrawn? Does the person become aware of the pain before the hand is withdrawn?

Yes, you're aware of the pain before your hand is withdrawn, otherwise you'd never withdraw your hand. The reason you withdraw before you scream is that it's your body's priority to remove that body part from the danger ASAP, which means that the yell (to alert people to your danger/pain) comes secondary.

I believe that the steps are:
1. Body recognizes pain.
2. Brain sends message to arm saying "pull back."
3. Brain sends message to mouth to yell.

Not only is the message sent to the arm first, but the arm executes its task much faster than the mouth.

That is because when a hand is on a hot stove, the hand does not feel the burn until it is pulled off of it where the air makes the hand realize how badly hurt it is.

It's a reflex designed to draw attention to yourself so that the other members of your "tribe" or whatever realize that there is danger or that you are in need of help.

Basically, the pain receptors work faster than your brain.

Pain ->brain realizes that hurt ->Argh!

that is bc ur brain feels the pain and is shocked so it takes a minute for the message to be sent to ur mouth. haha, doesnt sound very smart but i know its something like that.
