Because they have to follow this "political correctness" stupidity followed by some retail chains. Funny how these stores are desperate for your Christmas shopping money and do their utmost to convince people that the more they spend the more they love their family, yet go out of their way to hide Christmas.
How come they don't hide Valentines or Halloween in the back of the store. And what's wrong with saying Merry Christmas, or Happy Hanukah for that matter.
I don't buy my Christmas gifts at stores that are ashamed of Christmas. They don't need my money.

Probably because of the history of Christmas - even if it is now looked upon as a secular holiday it is a Christian holiday. There's no way around that. And in the USA we have people from all different backgrounds and many many people do not celebrate Christmas but they celebrate holiday's such as Hanakuh and Kwanza. Saying "Happy Holidays" is a way to show equality with everyone no matter what they do or don't celebrate during this time of the year. There are people that feel alienated when told "Merry Christmas" if they don't celebrate it...but there are those that don't care either way. Personally I think "Happy Holidays" is fine...it's not fair to force people to acknowledge only Christmas....I celebrate Christmas but I don't get offended if someone says Happy Holidays to me.

Personally I think having to mask "Merry Christmas" w/ 'happy Holidays' is stupid!
If a person chooses to say H. H. instead of MC then that's a personal decision. But to have a 'policy' is so freaken stupid. I celebrate Christmas but if someone said "Happy _____" whatever religious holiday I wouldn't get offended...That is so stupid! Someone is wishing me well bottom line how can that be wrong in any religion? So tell me Happy Kwanzaa or Happy Hanukkah...I will say "Thank you, you too." I don't need to point out the fact that I do not celebrate either.
If I tell someone "Merry Christmas" & they get offened, that's their issue NOT MINE again how can one get upset when really you are just wishing them well? It's called FREEDOM OF SPEECH.
Are we at the point where ppl cannot tell when something is said for the purpose of offending & when it's not?
Seriously are they going to get PC w/ "Bless you" when someone sneezes too now? I can't say that because some Scientologist will be offened?
I hate how stupid SOME Americans have become. It's like we have a 'speech patrol' ppl who listen strictly for words that might be considered offensive to someone somewhere.
W/ that being said..."Merry Christmas to all...and to all a good night"

If store workers are pleasant to me I dont care if they say Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, or Its Festivus for the rest of us. We make too much out of things. Its the thought that counts.

I worked in retail the last 2 Christmases and while the media said I wasn't allowed to say Merry Christmas to anyone, my supervisors never reprimanded me for it when I did.
Store employees are allowed to say it. It's the media who is making up bogus lies about the stores, saying the employees will be fired if they do.

Store workers are, first, employees of the company that employs them. If that company has a policy, the worker risks punishment or dismissal if they violate that policy.
Most stores employ a 'happy holidays' policy because they are there to make money, and as such they want to offend as few people as possible. This is a choice made by the company, not one imposed by any regulation or law.

I think some stores won't let them say "merry Christmas" because they think it has something to do with religion... So they all say happy holidays... I don't think there's anything wrong with merry christmas, it's been christmas since it exhisted so I don't see what's wrong with it or anything, everyone celebrates christmas! It would be sad without it! :)
