When you have questions like: 354+255=n, and then it says, "solve for n". How do you solve it? I'm very basic when it comes to math, even though I have taken this in class a long time ago. I take special math for beginners, even though I'm 15. I have problems with math.

Any time your math question says "Solve for N (or X, Y, Z, A, etc...), they want you to find out what number N equals.

They phrase it Solve for N, because sometimes in higher math problems, there is more than 1 variable, and they want to tell you which number they want you to solve for. In such an instance, normally your answer will still have a variable in it.

in your math problem, 354 + 255 = n, solve for n; they are saying that 354 plus 255 equals n, and they want you to tell them the one number that equals n, so you just need to add the two numbers.

if they equation was 354 times 255 = n, solve for n; they would want you to multiply the two numbers.

as you get higher in your math class, your equations will likely begin to look something like this:

2n = - 354 + 5n, solve for n. the goal itself is still the same: get n on one side of the equation, and the numbers on the other. for thisproblem, you would subtract 5n from each side, which would take you to:

-3n = -354; you would then divide both sides by -3 (to get rid of the -3 in front of the n), which would give you:

n = 118

When they say "solve for n" they are looking for the value of n that will make the equation true. With an equation, the thing on the left side has to be equal (the same value) as the thing on the right side. Since 354 and 255 sum up to 609, you have 609=n. So now you know what n has to be to make the equation true. You can turn it around and say "n=609" is your answer.

Now for the next level of algebra. The key is to remember that anything you do to one side of the equation, you also do to the other side -- then the equation is still true.

Suppose you had 354 = n - 255
You would start by adding 255 to both sides to get 354 + 255 = n.
Then you would sum up 354 and 255 to be 609.
Then you would see that n=609.
