the nicotine gets into the mother's bloodstream and then is passed onto the baby through the placenta. maternal smoking can lead to a low birth weight baby. my mom smoked her whole pregnancy with me and i'm fine as did my husband's mom and he's fine as does my friend and her unborn son is fine. good luck! in reference to smarty, the fetus and mom do not share blood, that's why the baby has a different blood type than the mom. the baby and mom share a placenta.
