I downloaded the software, but when I try to install the hardware, the progress bar stops and another pops up saying it is trying to detect new hardware, and it just stalls there. Could it be that I "unsafely" detatched the plug from the port before?

Go online and use Google.com to search for the make/model of the drivers.

For instance: I have an HP LaserJet 4 Plus

I can go to Google.com and type in as the search string:

hp laserjet 4 plus driver

and it will come back with the HP site where I can work my way through and download the drivers I need.

Yes, it could be. Go to device manager and look for items with a yellow exclamation point in front of them. Delete any you find, then disconnect the printer. Go to Add/Remove programs and remove any software that was installed as part of your setup attempt. Reboot your computer and start over. Make sure the software you downloaded installs correctly and DO NOT connect the printer until told to do so by the installer. That may not even happen until you re-boot again but when it does, connect and turn on the printer and WAIT for a "success" or other completion message.

Check in your settings to make sure you don't have the remnants of your printer still there. If you do, uninstall or remove it.

Make sure your printer is NOT powered up and NOT connected to the computer. Reboot the machine.

After reboot, do not attach any printer. Run the software installer for the printer and watch for any prompts to plug in and power up your printer.

That's the normal sequence.

Disconnect the printer cable from the computer and reconnect it firmly. Make sure the printer is plugged in and turned on.

Turn the computer off. Restart it.

It should find the printer.

i assume you have the thing plugged in already, if so go to control panel > system > hardware > device manager > right click on the unknown device and select uninstall.

then run through your installation
