I can help you with this one. I am working in Taiwan, so I have a front row seat to many of the STUFF going on in China.
The Dalai Lama is what we would call the voice of God. He wields as much power in Asia as the Pope does in Europe.
China recently claimed that they had their own Dalai Lama, but their scheme fell apart on them.
What you have to understand is that China is aggressively pushing to become the dominant power in the world. I must give them credit for being so good at creating two faces; one for their own people, and one for the rest of the world.
I won't get into the gossip that I hear around me every day. However, I believe the world will see China's true face soon enough.

The Dalai Lama is considered a separatist by Chinese authorities. Meaning that he wants the region of Tibet to secede (break away) from China. When the Dalai Lama is warmly invited by other states, Chinese authorities take this as a message that these states also wish China to break apart.

The Chinese government has invited the Dali Lama back as long as he stops the demand for an independent Tibet. The Dali Lama has refused that request.

Also, look at my other writings on Tibet and the Dali Lama found through my profile.

Further, an independent study was done to determine the number of religious people in China this year. It was found that it exceeded the governments official numbers by about 5 times. This being reported in both independent and state run news services.

Religious freedom exists in China. However, one can not publicly stand on a soap box preaching or politicking. That is what got Falon Gong in so much trouble and why they were eventually banned. What they wanted was to change the government into something it had never been. If a religious organization does that in the states, we yank tax exempt status. If they don't comply by filing and paying taxes, then we can throw them in jail.

If you had not noticed, the accusations by the Fulong Gong sect have been quietly ignored by our government because much of what they have been saying can't be proved, or have been proven to be lies.

Prior to China invading Tibet (something I do not approve -- however, it has long historical ties to China and they wanted it back for, at the very least, the last 150 years.) it was a dictatorship under a religious monarchy. Today, Tibet has more say in their own lives, more freedom, more say in their countries self determination then anytime in their history.

Last year China competed passenger rail service to Tibet and is encouraging the Chinese people to visit. There has been such a large influx of visitors there that the government has asked the people to put off their visit till Tibet gets its tourist infrastructure in place. Westerners can visit, but they must go with a tour group.
