The fertility rate ( number of births per woman) in India is only a little higher than in the US and is falling, but fraction of women of child bearing age in the population is larger, because the drop in the fertility rate and the increase in life expectancy was a recent development. This means they will have a high birth rates and the populating growth rate will be large until the population ages. The population will grow until the birth rate equals the death rate and with improved health it is mostly old people that die.
Europe has had fertility rates below replacement level since shortly after WWII and only now is the population declining. The US fertility rate fell to replacement level in 1970 and our population would still continue to grow but not as fast, even if we stopped immigration tomorrow.

The higher the economic levels in a country, the lower the population growth rate. As India's economic success continues, you will see a lower birth rate.

tAs he country has shifted to include a very large Catholic population that does not permit birth control and a ban on all abortions, coupled with a lack of women's rights, the birth rate is bound to be significantly higher than the west. The sad thing is the quality of life for those children born in even moderately poor homes is abysmal.

primarily it is because they have birthrate is significantly higher than death rate in india. in general it seems more industrialized a country and the higher theecomomic situation the lower the birthrate. in many countries the birthrate and the deathrate are equal or even the death rate is higher than birthrate so the population is simply growing older but not larger or is showing negative growth....many european countries are like this. the united states birthrate is only slightly more than our deathrate however our u.s. population is grwoing significantly due to immigration. many individuals from turkey are also immigrated to countries like germany which is helping them maintain a stable growth rate.

It is the votebank politics of Indian politicians that has contributed to population growth. They do not want to stop the so called minority community from giving birth to dozens of kids so that their vote bank develops.
