as the limit before you are legally drunk?

My father was killed in a car crash, caused by a drunk driver, when I was 10; and I have absolutely no sympathy for anyone who drives after having even 1 drink. I believe anyone who drives drunk should go to jail for at least a month, then lose their driver's license for at least 5 years. I think that would teach them how to call a cab, have a designated driver, or if they have the money, hire a driver.

One alcoholic drink before operating a vehicle is one too many. As for the punishment, the most common first offense is probation. I think the punishment for first time offenders should result in the following:

1) Suspension of driving license for no less than one year
2) Three month mandatory jail time
3) Much higher insurance rate
4) Loss of employment
5) Community service
6) Picture in the local paper (describing why your picture has been posted)

I think the punishments above would have a much greater impact on those who choose to drink and drive than a mere probation sentence. The above may sound too severe to many but I think one would seriously reconsider driving under the influence, again. I look at it this way, my children and loved ones are on the same streets as these people and I want them (the drinking drivers) off the streets.

I would also like to add that there are far too many variables in determining how much alcohol it takes to be considered legally drunk.

First, ones metabolic rate
Second, ones tolerance level
Third, ones body weight and ones sex
There are other variable but I'll stop at this point.

There should be jail time, or at least community service, as well as losing your drivers lisense for a couple of years as punishment for driving drunk. The legal limits already put some people over the limit with just 1 drink. Of course, if you are a real porker, they don't, but you have to set the limit for normal people.

Personally, I think that there should be a "no alcohol when driving" limit. Even a little alcohol slows down the reaction time enough that something very bad can happen.
So to answer your question, very high penalties including jail time.
I know I'll get a lot of thumbs down on this one, but it is the way I feel and I have felt this way ever since a good friend of mine was hit by someone who had only had "a glass of wine with dinner." Now that friend will always have pain and back problems.
And, yes. If I drink, I don't drive.

No one should drive after 1 drink.....period! Buzzed driving IS drunk driving.

If you kill someone you should have be put before the jury with the same penalty as a murderer!
1st offense: If you just get caught by the police (no accident) then you should have your license suspended for 1 year, 3 months minimum jail time, complete a drug and alcohol program and your picture posted in the local paper!
2nd Offense: 1 year mandatory jail (no early release), License suspended for the rest of your life, picture posted in the local paper everyday for 6 months!
FORGET THE THREE STRIKES YOU'RE OUT THEORY....If you get caught a 3rd time......you're a stupid idiot and have no rights!!!

Look, we are taught and see everyday what drunk driving does .......if ANYONE is stupid enough to drive drunk or even "buzzed" they should be severly punished. END OF STORY!

I totally agree with Catmama! I would add to the 1st offense 6 months mandatory volunteering with victims of drunk drivers in the hospital or rehab setting.

i'm no longer up on uk regulation so i will in basic terms permit you already know what could ensue in Ontario, Canada. to commence off, they're going to droop his licence for a minimum of three months. there might additionally be a huge set of fines, in the neighbourhood of ?9 000. If it fairly is a customary offence and he can instruct undue worry, they could be lenient. i could advise that rather of pleading in charge, he get a sturdy lawyer (barrister, solicitor or the two). when you consider that he does not have already got one, which will provide him a pair of weeks to discover the lawyer and get a defence set up. it fairly is not any longer likely that he can beat the fee, until eventually the police in no way genuinely observed him utilizing. yet a minimum of the different information gets a appropriate presentation and he could stay away from penal complex time and be waiting to rigidity for purposes of attending to his employment. sturdy success in this one.

No limit should be prescribed.Total ban should be the rule.Any offenders should have their licenses revoked for life, even for first offence, coupled with a rigorous imprisonment for a minimum period of 5 years. This only can deter such offences.
