Yes, I do; if I own the text and plan on keeping it. It depends how you study and learn. Some people learn better when they make notes.

It would depend on what type of learner you are. If you are a kinesthic learner, underlining would work, but taking notes would probably be more effective. If you are an auditory learner, just listening to the lecture would do it for you. Perhaps those who only underline main ideas have already read the text and listened to the lecture and therefore don't need to take notes. (I rarely took notes - undergraduate or graduate work.)

Horrendous habit. There are loads of people that do it but a.) it mutilates the text for anybody else because they may not agree with what you underlined and b.) you don't get practice at making sensible notes that you can refer to later (i.e. can you remember why you underlined something 3 months ago without notes?).

I use a highlighter but found that typing out notes to review for an exam was another way of reviewing the material. My notes were for what was covered in lecture that is often not in the text.

Actually, when I read for my class, I pull out the most important topic and bullet it on Word. That way I know what the topic is trying to say. With even some information under the bullet. It does help you remember it, and also if you look at it for 10 minutes and put it down, you will remember it then if you do it hours on in. Then what happens is this, it will stay in your long term longer, if you do it in shorter sessions. Hope this helps.
