Only when telling the truth would be more hurtful than lying. An example is if a parent says "Isn't my child beautiful" when in fact it looks like it fell from the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down and you say "Yes, it is". Now that is a lie but it would be cruel to say, "Hell no! That kid is disgusting".
There are many other circumstances where lying is acceptable and they are called "white lies" because they are meant with good intentions.
Lying for personal gain or to harm someone is bad all the time.

There is no such thing as a good lie. EVER.
Lying to protect someone's feelings shows disrespect for the person you lie to. You don't think they can handle the truth. How rude! If you think I am so weak and pathetic that you would rather lie to me than tell me the truth than you are not my friend! This is one of the greatest, most selfish, self-deceptive lies one can ever tell themselves. Lying to protect someone else's feelings. You are only lying to yourself! You want to avoid the embarrassment of pointing out the problem. You are lying for selfish reasons, the root of all lies. Don't kid yourselves.
Lying is the worst thing a person can do to another. Murder, rape, racism...all these things are lies or denial of truth in one form or another. Everything begins with a lie. It all starts with being selfish.
When one presumes to lie to another. That other person will quite often notice. This leads to distrust. If your husband tells you that you look good in your new dress, but you know he is lying. Or he admits later that he lied. But later he tells you that you look beautiful when you are pregnant and you doubt him. What if he is telling the truth the second time? The moment has lost something. This is because of the trust lost because of a little white lie.
Even little lies have consequences.
There is no such thing as a good lie. EVER.
Here is an example one might use to refute my argument...
Let's play pretend and some terrorists have you captive. They want to capture your family too. So they ask you where your family is. What do you do? Tell them where they are? No, you lie and give them false information. Sounds good. You save your family even if you don't have much hope for yourself. (This is pretend, so the terrorists aren't very good at interrogating and using torture or whatever means of getting info out of you...they just take you at your word)
Here is my reply. You have more than one or two options. You actually have many, I'll give 4. Give special attention to the fourth option as you might find yourself in this situation someday. My suggestion is to swallow a lockpick today just in case.
1. You tell the truth and give the location of your family.
- Not desirable, as you hand your family over.
2. You lie, give false information, and save your family.
- You save your family, but lose your soul because of
the lie.
3. You say nothing or tell them that you refuse to
cooperate.
- You save your family and your integrity by not lying.
You are lost anyway. It doesn't matter if you live or
die at the moment. They already have you.
4. You pick the lock on your handcuffs and grab the gun
on the terrorist on your left, use him as a body shield
and kill the interrogator and his cohorts. Then you go
on a rampage and single-handedly destroy the entire
terrorist outpost, picking up extra ammunition and
weapons as necessary. But you don't stop there. You
decide to declare war on all terrorism around the globe.
No one else seems to be doing a good job of it. So
you hire a specialized crew to back you up and you fly
from nation to nation eliminating all the evil in the
world. Oh, and your family? That was just a ruse to
fool the terrorists into capturing you. You never had a
family. But, oh no! You just lied about having a family!
Everything you believed, all your ideals about truth, are
lost. In a fit of depression, you believe the world is
better off without a hypocrite such as yourself and you
jump off to your next mission and never even bother to
open your parachute... The remaining terrorists hold a
party when they get the news of your demise.

Some anthropologists believe that language was developed for the purpose of deception as you cannot easily disguise the body's reactions. That said, every word coming from your mouth may be a lie. Especially the ones that are about you.

What about Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy? Thats not lying to kids? And what about when you tell someone they look nice just to give them a little pick me up even if you don't entirely think so?
I think when you insist things be black and white while life itself is mostly comprised of grey areas, you're lying to yourself.

yes lying is sometimes a good thing like if someone you don't know is trying to get your information you can lie in order to protect yourself. But that's my opinion.

To lie is never good, but in saying this I must also say that if telling the truth or just telling something because it is the truth will hurt or damage someone then it is better to keep it to yourself. Don't lie just shutup and say nothing.
A lie is not good but the truth can sometimes hurt more.
My opinion.

If you signifigant other asks you if she looks fat in something.
Lying is a very good thing.
Sometimes we mold the truth to make it easier for the person we are speaking to to hear. Sometimes they don't need that and they need the truth to help them deal with an issue. It's a hard choice but we should always be as honest as we can. However, we need to always be completely honest with the most important person in our lives...ourselves.
