What do you think ? I can see 7 million for Heatley or Alfredson... but...
It seems too much for Spezza. Hes only got 1 goal (12 assists).

The fact that someone else way overpaid one of their players (Yeah, I'm talking about you Gomez, I swear, everyone should be using his agent) is hardly a good reason to do the same.
I'm not saying hes WAY overpaid, but it seems to me they could have got him for less.

I think Buffalo knew it was too much for Vanek but were desperate after losing Briere and Drury...

Well since in the post-lockout NHL, only Joe Thornton (1.44) and Sidney Crosby (1.40) have higher points per game averages than Spezza (1.34), I think Spezza is grossly underpaid in his new contract.

OH easily! everyone that asserts no, would not understand his which skill to the Senators. With him and heatley locked up for 7 and six years, and emery for 3, they're a distinct rigidity for destiny years. Spezza is up and coming and a good play maker to heatley! spezza can score, too. at 7 million i say thats a good purchase!

I think clearly Spezza is worth that.
However, has Ottawa shot themselves in the foot?
By signing Heatley (7.5 M), Spezza (7 Mil), and Fisher (4.5 Mil). Along with Alfy's contract. The Sens only have another 8 Mil in cap space with 10 players to sign. What makes Ottawa so good is their depth, but the remaining of their team next year will be all guys under 1 Million.
Therefore, could this have doomed the Sens into Tampa Bay Lightning status, a team with a golden top line, but no depth, Practically making them a 5-8 ranked team with little chance at the cup?

Spezza is nothing without Heatley. You put any player on the ice with Alfie and Heatley ... he will get the points Spezza gets.
Look at Spezza's turnovers and what he brings to the table defensively ... he is not worth the $5 million he is getting now.
Way way over rated ... hopefully he is buying Heatley and Alfie a few nice dinners with his new found wealth ... they got it for him.

He is worth as much as Brier, Drury or Gomez. At this point in his career he should get more than Alfie on a long term deal, maybe not for this year, though.
I guess it all depends on who's doing the evaluating, Sather and Holmgren would probably think he's worth $7 Mil. Murray might think he's doing him a favour, letting him stick around, at $5 mil while Kevin Lowe might offer him $10 mil. JFJ would not see where he could use such a player at any cost.

To Ottawa it may be a good deal. They now have their three brightest young stars locked up at 2007 salary rates. Another team (like say the Rangers) might have paid that much for him but I think others may not have. For Ottawa though, this means Spezza, Heatley and Emery are locked up for at least 3 years at today's NHL prices. It may seem like a bargain in the case of Heats and Spez 5 years down the road when top players will all be drawing over 10 mil a season.

Who knows. but the way teams are trying to lock up their young talent, he seems like one of the more promising players and has really proven himself. Certainly more so than Vanek. I like vanek, but-Damn!

When you sign contract for that much you better produce. I know when Sid got his contract here he's going to produce. I'm guessing the Senators are looking for a repeat of last year only the outcome different. The front office is hoping that he'll step up and get the job done.
