It is most definitely not normal to have pain and bleeding in your first trimester. Call your doctor or midwife immediately if you ever notice unusual symptoms such as bleeding or cramping during pregnancy. They need to examine you and make sure everything is alright with both you and the baby. Don't hesitate to call and get things checked out when you don't know what it is going on. There is an article posted below that may help.

I agree with your boyfrieid. Bleeding accompanied by pain needs to be checked out by the doctor.
I would call the doctors office immediately and get an appointment.
