a friend told me that the new regulation states that you need a car numberplate with the postcode on it of where the car was MOT'd or your car will fail, is this true?

It is not true. Your friend was joshing with you.

Perhaps they were being confused by the first two letters of new-style numberplates, which indicate the registration district.
There have always been location indicators as part of a numberplate (the last two letters of the old style 3-letter plates) but that's never been an MOT issue.

That is the first i have heard.

I would have thought it has to be recorded on the DVLA database that that numberplate is registered at a certain postcode, rather than actually appearing on a number platye. That could lead to serious crime if you drive a nice flashy vehicle!

The number plate must show the details of the plate supplier. This is a measure to cut down on false plates being used to dodge traffic tickets

Totally untrue. New car registration letters give the location of where they were first registered but that is all. Nothing to do with the MOT.

True! I loved my first car. Unfortunately, I totalled it; making it my only car so far. But it's ok because, where I live, I don't need one. Anyway, I loved it.
