These dates are speculative since almost all we know of Socrates comes via Plato. Various dates have been offered or mentioned in various books with more or less a degree of probability. In fact, we have no way of knowing whether or not the ideas Socrates is spouting are actually the words of Socrates or rather the ideas of Plato.

His most famous tidbit of wisdom is perhaps "The unexamined life is not worth living."
