The circumference of a sphere was measured to
be 70 cm with a possible error of 0.9 cm. Use differentials
to estimate the maximum error in the calculated surface area.
Estimate the relative error in the calculated surface area.
Hint: The circumference of a sphere of radius r is C = 2pr,
and its surface area is A = 4pr2. Eliminate r first!

Use the two given formulas to write an equation for the surface area in terms of the circumference. Take the derivative of this area equation with respect to C. Multiply both sides by dC, This will be your differential equation. It will be dA = something dC. This equation tells you how much a small change in c (dC) changes A (dA). Plug in 0.9cm for dC and 70cm for C.
