It runs unsteadily anyway and then as soon as i put it in Drive it cuts out, the same with Reverse. It sometimes works but usually it doesn't.

there are several reasons for that, the carbrator might be old and needs to be replaced or the engine is fluded. you should get it checked out, its not a big problem. if you are driving an older car its normal. and if you took it to the shop and they asked you for too much money get out and seek for better places. you might be able to get the whole thing fixed by probably 200 bucks! if there is something needs to be replaced. if not, maybe 70 bucks would do it.
make sure you do it now, cus it might mess up the tranny.

Could be a number of things.

1. Idle mix is wrong.
2. Fuel filter is clogged.
3. Spark plugs are fouled.
4. The car's computer is screwed up.
5. Fuel injection ports are clogged.

When one or any combination of the above is happening, when you shift into a gear, the mixture of gas and air going through your carburetor or fuel injection system is not enough to keep the car running. At least in the idle state.

If you have a carburetor, then you can "try" to change the fuel filter, spark plugs and put some STP in the gas tank. That may cure it. Plus spray some Gumout in the carburetor, do this before putting in the new spark plugs as it might foul the plugs. If this does not work, the carburetor may need a overhaul which involves taking the carburetor apart and cleaning it and reassembly. This does not always work, but, it should.

If you have a fuel injected engine, take it to a mechanic and have them look at it.

Good luck

Meaning it acts like it's in neutral? My van did that, turned out I was low on transmission fluid. Get your transmission checked for leaks. I spent about $1000 replacing all the gaskets!

Hi Charli,In order to make a educated guess at the problem ,you should tell us the YR,MAKE MODEL,carbureted, fuelinjected, standard, automatic trans, and driveability problems. If it is fuel injected it could be a bad fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter, vacuum line to fuel pressure regulator, etc. If it is a carbureted car it could be a failing fuel pump, bad carburetor, vacuum leak at MAP sensor, plugged fuel filter ,etc.
