to keep cut apples from getting brown, brush them (the cut surfaces) with lemon juice (even a bit diluted).

I don't think you can get "cut apples" from staining. You can, however, keep apple slices from turning brown by placing them in water with a couple drops of vinegar.

Depends on how I plan to use them. If it's just until I'm going to cook them (pies and such) I drop them into water with a hefty dose of lemon juice or other citrus...often lime.

If they are to be served fresh, I treat with Fruit Fresh per directions.......and realize they are good for about 30 minutes max.

If I'm taking for lunch, coring first and filling with peanutbuter, I put the halves back together tighly and wrap tight with plastic wrap.

Add lemon juice to them and you will see the difference.
