A mage (magus, magician--sorcerer/wizard) is a person who practices ceremonial magic or magic in the old sense of the word (involving divination, astrology, Kabalah, theurgy, necromancy, talismanic and natural magic, number magic, angelology, and hermetic arts among other practices).

The word dates to ancient times. It refers to shamanic priests within Babylonian or some such culture. Mages were consulted but feared and marginalized because even in ancient times magic was thought to be sinister--even when the outcome was good.

Medieval and modern-day mages are practitioners of "ceremonial magick" and western occultism and there are many different orders. Well known ones are The Order of the Golden Dawn, Ordo Templis Orientis, and the Aurum Solis. Works by Phillips and Denning (Aurum Solis) are probably good sources to learn about ceremonial magick. I belong to the Ordo Mageorum (Fellowship of the Magi) which has a Christian influence (as medieval magianism did) although the other orders named do not ascribe to anything related to Christian sensibilities.
