I continue to support Congress enacting a federal statute making any sort of "if X then Pete Rose" argument a hanging offense without appeal. I've been seeing those things crop up since August 1989 and have yet to see one that even remotely makes sense, let alone is convincing and supportable.

As for the Black Sox -- Hell No. Hall candidacy isn't even the right question; should any of them be reinstated to MLB's good graces? The answer to that is, of course, still Hell No.

Most people cannot even name any of the eight beyond Jackson, and that's because he's been the primary subject of a mawkish film and has the too-cute nickname that cannot be forgotten.

Apologists and advocates always want to start with Jackson, and tend to use the argument that, aw, he was just too durn stoopid to unnerstand whut all wuz goin' on. That really rankles; Jackson was illiterate, but that means he couldn't read or write very well. It doesn't mean he was a moron and a rube; he was of at least average intelligence and he did know the fix was in. His testimony leaves no doubt of that. The notion that demeaning him and tarnishing his memory (rather, compounding the tarnish) by making him out to be a witless dolt somehow improves his standing is, well, I'll be kind and just say it is woefully misguided.

The apologists and advocates, many of whom have done no research beyond watching Field Of Dreams (awww....), should by now realize that the only chance -- and it isn't a good one, not by a parsec -- is to start with Weaver. Weaver's legacy has a remotely tiny chance of vindication.

Jackson's does not. Nor do those of Williams, Cicotte, Felsch, Gandill, Risberg, and McMullin.

Everyone thinks that Shoeless Joe Jackson should be in the HOF. But baseball has to toe the line with this one. It's the only leverage they have to prevent future cheating....

No, they should not be in the Hall of Fame. Bill James nailed it when he said that people who think Joe Jackson should be in the Hall of Fame are like the women who show up in court wanting to marry the cute murderer.

Yes. It wasn't their fault that Comiskey was a cheap bastard. They had to make money somehow. Comiskey was the real villian in the scandal. He even charged players money to wash their own uniforms, and when they won to get into the World Series, Comiskey sent them flat champagne.

Joe Jackson should be allowed in. He was taken advantage of and it is a certainty that he did nothing to throw any games. His Series batting average proves that.

Well if they aren't going to let Rose in for betting while he was coaching, they are going to let them in for throwing a world series, thats for sure. I believe that Rose should be in, but I don't think that the players who gambled on losing a game should be let in. I also don't think that McGwire, Bonds, Sosa, Giambi, Palermiero,etc.. should be let in either. I bet Bonds and McGwire get in though

They cheated. They admitted that they cheated. Jackson was among those who admitted it.
I would throw Comiskey out, but I would never ever let them in.

They won't let any of them in as long as Pete Rose is alive. If they did that, then Rose would pretty much know he is getting in after his death.
