He's insane.
Jeter, Reyes, Hanley Ramirez, Jimmy Rollins, Renteria, Young, Cabrera, and Tulowitzki are all better overall shortstops than Everett.
If he just meant defensively, Everett is in the top 5 MAYBE.
pedrooch - While I agree with some of what you said, baseball historians, to a man, would tell you Ozzie Smith was the best defensive PLAYER to touch a field, shortstop and overall.

We need to see how he comes back from the injury, but prior to that, Everett was one of the slickest fielding shortstops in the game. Huge range, quick first step, good to the left and the right, accurate throws, could climb the ladder -- exactly what any team wants when playing that half of the inning.
Hitting -- nah. He's pretty weak. There's plenty of better hitting SS than Everett, and by now it's pretty obvious he's not going to get much better if at all.
A team can and should be able to endure one noodlebat in the lineup. The Astros have been carrying more than one for several years -- Ausmus still on the roster, Taveras was no prize, Biggio had more downs than ups. Others. Everett's glove paid for his bat, to an extent, but this team really needs to rebuild and he may not survive that.

Miguel Tejada
Life time fielding % .971 average league average fielding % .972
Lifetime fielding range 4.57 league average 4.12
Derek Jeter
Life time fielding % .975 average league average fielding % .972
Lifetime fielding range 4.05 league average 4.12
Jose Reyes
Life time fielding % .975 average league average fielding % .975
Lifetime fielding range 4.11 league average 4.03
Adam Everett
Life time fielding % .977 average league average fielding % .974
Lifetime fielding range 4.27 league average 4.00
The reason why league averages change, for each player, is it is based on the years each player played.
If all thier careers ended now, than Adam Everett would have the best numbers. Except for Derek Jeter and Miguel Tejada, his career is short, so you would have to compare Adam Everett's numbers to Derek Jeter and Miguel Tejada's first 7 years to give you a more accurate statistic. But so far Adam Everett has the best numbers.
And to Kris, the last time I checked, short stop is a defensive position, and the question isn't which is the best overall baseball player but whom is the best short stop. But if you want to include batting averages also.
Adam Everett .248
Jose Reyes .284
Derek Jeter .317
Miguel Tejada .287
And anybody that knows anything about baseball knows it's pitching & defense that's far more important than hitting. Most baseball historians concider Phill Rizzutto the best short stop of all time yet he only batted .273.

I agree with you that Jeter and Tejada are better, but Reyes I'm not so sure he's even a big leaguer anymore after that performance. Maybe the best shortstop in Triple A.
Also, the guy from Toronto whose name escapes me is nasty.

yea no doubt! look at the Rockies Tulowitzki he is a stud.
And then you have Jimmy Rollins who is by far better than Evertt! Your boss is just saying this because he works for the Astros.

Just because he is your boss dosn't mean he is right, but saying Adam Evertt is the best ss does make him delusionally retarted (no offence).

Reyes maybe, the other two are not better right now. I would still say that none of them are the best. Reyes is top three, with Tulo and McDonald.

Jeter (NYY), Tejada (BAL), Reyes (NYM), Tulowitzki (COL), Greene (SD), Rollins (PHI), Cabrera (LAA), Guillen (DET), McDonald (TOR), Ramirez (FLA), Renteria (ATL), Hardy (MIL), Eckstein (STL), Wilson (PIT), Visquel (SF), Furcal (LAD), Crosby (OAK)
So if you ask me Everett isn't better than one player on that list so there's no way hes close to the top5. I have him at number 17.
