Saffron = renunciation/disinterestedness
White = path of light/truth
Green = the relationship to the soil
The "Ashoka Chakra" in the centre of the white is the wheel of the law of dharma.

Prior to the intervention of the East India British company there was no single flag for India and it was a lose association of kingdoms annexed by the East India Company over time.

According to Wikipeida: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Flag
According to the first Vice President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
"Bhagwa or the saffron colour denotes renunciation or disinterestedness. Our leaders must be indifferent to material gains and dedicate themselves to their work. The white in the centre is light, the path of truth to guide our conduct. The green shows our relation to (the) soil, our relation to the plant life here, on which all other life depends. The "Ashoka Chakra" in the centre of the white is the wheel of the law of dharma. Truth or satya, dharma or virtue ought to be the controlling principle of those who work under this flag. Again, the wheel denotes motion. There is death in stagnation. There is life in movement. India should no more resist change, it must move and go forward. The wheel represents the dynamism of a peaceful change....

The Indian National Flag was designed by Pingali Venkayya. The official flag specifications require that the flag be made only of "khadi," a special type of hand-spun yarn. The display and use of the flag are strictly enforced by the Indian Flag Code."

Before the Birtish East India company unified India it was three different kingdoms. So India has been through a long list of various flags.

In addition the central scultputre means: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Flag
"The angle from which this picture has been taken, minus the inverted bell-shaped lotus flower, has been adopted as the National Emblem of India showing the Horse on the left and the Bull on the right of the Ashoka Chakra in the circular base on which the four Indian lions are standing back to back. On the far side there is an Elephant and a Lion instead. The wheel "Ashoka Chakra" from its base has been placed onto the center of the National Flag of India."

According to the same source:
"After India became a republic in 1950, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) brought out the specifications for the flag for the first time in 1951. These were revised in 1964 to conform to the metric system which was adopted in India."

List of Indian flags: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Indian_flags

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India
"Home to the Indus Valley civilization and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history.[14] Four major world religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism originated here, while Islam, Christianity, Judaism and Zoroastrianism arrived in the first millennium CE and shaped the region's variegated culture. Gradually annexed by the British East India Company from the early eighteenth century and colonised by the United Kingdom from the mid-nineteenth century, India became a modern nation-state in 1947 after a struggle for independence that was marked by widespread use of nonviolent resistance as a means of social protest."

If you are talking flowers, the red rose is the color of passion and love. Yellow roses signify friendship. A white rose can mean purity and innocence. Pink roses stand for caring, something you would give a girlfriend before things get really serious. Also a good color to give to your mother!
