....a market for adult fairytales, i have an idea for a fantasy novel based around celtic mythology but set in a modern times, it begins with a young girl who is taken on a field trip with her school friends, she stubbornly ventures into a fairy fort, when told not to, she then stumbles across real-life fairies. The story cuts to present time, and she starts to remember what she saw at the time, although she cant be sure if it really happened or was just her over active imagination..anyway, weird occurances start to take place, and eventually, havent quiet figured out yet, shes transported to the "otherworld" well known in celtic mythology and weird and wonderful things ensue from there!

Do these type of stories only appeal to kids and teenagers?

I want to write it quite dark, with black humour thrown in etc.

I think so. Mostly they apply to kids and teens though. I would recommend reading Holly Black- I think your looking at writing something along her style- to tell you if that's what your interested in publishing. Beware, there is sex and drugs and other things in these books. I don't know how they got into the YA section.

Tithe
Ironside (sequel to Tithe)
Valiant

I think what your referring to is "urban fantasy". There isn't a huge market for it, but it is there. I am an adult and I read it. Some other authors in this genre are Neil Gaiman, Charles De Lint, and numerous others.

Because manga is so popular, I would guess that an adult fairy-tale would do well. I imagine you would want your book marketed to the teenage/adult group that reads Manga.

In the future, please use complete questions, such as, "Is there a market for adult fairytales?", as opposed to just "is there", but only if you want to get more and better answers, because many people ignore vague questions.
