What are you supposed to count as the first day of your period? My cycle is kind of weird, first I spot a tiny (I mean minuscule) amount of blood, then the next day a spot normal, then my period starts the third day. So which day is the actual start date..the slight spotting, the normal spotting, or the big gush? (I apologize if that's TMI!) Thanks!

I think I would consider the first day as the first day of actual blood....so in your case, the 3rd day. Perhaps a bit is just leaking out for some reason before your actual period starts???

Never tmi.....that's what this thing is here for!! lol

It's been many years since my last actual menstrual cycle -- had hysterectomy when I was 29, and I am 49 -- but I remember what it was like to have a cycle (funny, I still have menstrual cycles in my dreams).

Your first couple of days of spotting is not your actual cycle. You cannot start to count your cycle until you actually have a "flow". The spotting is not part of your flow. If the spotting is dark brown, that is a discharge, which you can have anytime during the month, don't be alarmed if that happens, because it could.

As a matter of fact, I spotted like that with both of my pregnancies for about four months ... scared the daylights out of me at the time, but my babies are 28 and 29 now.

If you are spotting bright red, you might want to mention it to your gynecologist. In my case, it turned out to be fibroid tumors that were "breaking up". But, to ease your mind, I had to have my hysterectomy because of endometriosis ... although the fibroid tumors didn't help much. My goodness, those tumors sure caused alot of cramping, and FLOODING. Some cycles, I would use two (2) tampons (yes, TWO!) and a pad, change all every two hours, and it would still mess up my clothes. I sure don't miss those days!

The first day of actual red blood. The spotting is old blood and not part of that cycle's period
