Is this just some whining to get the rules changed in a rare situation? Or do you see it being common that the goons are uncaged to make cheap shots in overtime?
So the BIG Question: Should overtime penalized players be allowed to take part in shootouts?

Hmmmmm.

If the rule changes, and there was a multi-fight in overtime, and all players have been used or are out on penalty, then who is next? Maybe there would be more fighting in overtime? Another, hmmmmmm.

I think if time expires and a guy is still in the box he shouldn't be allowed to participate in the shootout. If the game continued under normal play he'd have to serve out the penalty. I don't know how many times it's come up so far but if it becomes a big issue the league will have to deal with it.
This is a discussion about hockey here so let's look into this. Should a penalty call in the last minute of overtime result in a penalty shot then? Would that put an end to it? I know there are those who think it's unfair because the refs call too many penalties already but there are some really cheap shots that get handed out in the last minute of OT.

It makes sense that if a player is still in the box at the end of overtime he should not be eligible for the shootout.

If a player is in the box at the end of the third the penalty carries over to the overtime, hence the overtime should carry over to the shootout. this would truly penalize a star player who takes a penalty with 2 seconds left. The 2 seconds are meaningless

With respect to the Habs Pens game, Mtl was probably lucky they used Gonchar rather than Staal in the shootout, What was Therrien thinking?

I agree that a player whose penalty doesn't expire before OT is over shouldn't be allowed in the shootout. But how does this stop goons from taking cheap shots in OT? Not likely they were going to be a shooter anyway. Will referees now be pressured NOT to call penalties against the Crosby's. Ovechkin's, and the Zetterberg's of the league if this becomes a rule? Just wondering.....

A shootout isn't a hockey game, it is a skills competition. Since you can only get penalties during a game, you should only be able to serve penalties during a game. Once the skills competition starts, the penalties end. If there is something particularly egregious at the end of a game, the league handles this with fines and suspenstions.

Definately should NOT change this rule.
I the last 2 minutes, some teams would try to reunite the Olympic diving team. If you're playing against Pittsburg, for example, you could get Crosby and Malkin out of the shootout by falling over their stick or starting a fight. It would become part of the strategy. Don't give me another reason to hate shootouts.

i honsetly think the overtime should continue for the rest of the PP. so many times you see guys taking penalties with under 30 seconds left in OT because they know it will not effect their team.

Only if the players penalty has not expired. If he is still technically in the box he should not be allowed. Otherwise they should be able to shoot. I personally wish they would get rid of the shoot out all together.

Don't worry, Bob Gainey's voice has been heard, and this is now on the agenda for Decembers GM meetings.

I don't think so. That might get rid of some of those lat minute cheap shots.
