So Im going to my moms baby shower tomorrow (yes my moms- there are 25 years between me and my soon to be sister!!) Anyway.
I have some little things to get her, but I want to make a basket of necessities...
What are those little things that no one got you that you realized later you needed (example... gum cleaner or thermometer or something along those lines)
I want to put a bunch of little things in this basket (dont want to spend a fortune though!)

FYI- I've already been to the baby stores, I've done her baby list thing, and we have all the big stuff, now I just want to do the basket full of little things she will need.
Also, I would love to do the "free" coupons for her, but my parents actually live about 10 hrs away! =(
Thats a really good idea though!

A baby carrier. No one thinks of these.. but man to be hands free with a newborn happily snuggled up is worth a million bucks to a new mom :)
(i would suggest a pouch sling, like new native, peanutshell or hotsling)!
OHHH and lanolin (if she is going to bf) no one thinks about taking that to the hospital.. and man it helps during the first few days! i always give lanolin to new moms :)
ANd mitts (so the baby doesnt scratch him/herself) i had to put socks on my sons hands when he was first born

Have you thought of getting something for just your mom?? I know when I had just given birth the last thing i wanted to do was cook, so perhaps some gift certificates to a restuarant...
Baby meds.....tylenol, mylocon (for gas), a vaporizer, baby oragel, a teething ring, a thermometer, baby ear drops (for an ear infection) and pedialyte....
I can't tell you how much i wished someone had put together a 'medicine basket" for me......these are all things we're desperately searching for at 2am and feel a HUGE sigh of relief when we find it in our medicine cabinets and don't have to run to the store!!!
Also, if she's formula feeding, a formula divider and bottle stand is a MUST HAVE.
Good luck!

I like to give gifts for the mother... the first couple of months, the baby doesn't need much at all... just the basics, but the mom needs quite a bit of things...
I'd pack some yummy snacks for her, some comforting herbal teas or hot choc packs and a new coffee mug, maybe some nice smelling lotion for her hands, a little necklace or earings (nothing expensive, but fun), maybe a new pair of slippers, how about some bubble bath, or a CD with nice calming music... a new hair clip, etc.
All of these things could be baby/mommy related, or just for mom... good luck!

Recieving blankets are great. A towel with a hood and a baby washcloth that fits like a glove. I loved those. A thermometer would be great, ones made for babies. Shampoo, diaper cream, a brush, nail clippers. You know, toilettries for babies. I think the gift basket is a great idea!

You can never have enough recieving blankets, I thought 10 was enough for my first baby and I ran out on day 2. I would say the biggest help is free for you. Give her gift certificates for you to come do her laundry, babysit while she takes a nap, do the dishes, make dinner one exhausting night. That's the kind of gifts I appreciated the most that you can't get. I know a guy who gave his wife the gift of a weekly cleaning lady for 6 months the day she had their son. She loved it! All the other real neccesities are expensive, carseat, crib, formula (if not breastfeeding) and diapers. Babies really don't need toys or anything.

Lots of burp cloths, bibs, onesies, and receiving blankets. My baby goes through those so fast! Also if the baby is a winter baby then you might want to buy a few hats or beanies and lots of socks. I just bought my son a hat that is so soft and it Velcros underneath his chin, that way his ears are covered too. I know that diapers are expensive but if you could just buy one package and a pack of wipies for your mom that would be such help. My husband and I were so grateful for the wipies and diapers that people had given us at my baby shower. It is so difficult to go to the store when you have a newborn, that was just one less thing to have to worry about. It really was a blessing. Congratulations to you and your mom. God bless you

I got a "special laundry basket" and it was one of the best baby/mom gifts I ever got! It had laundry detergent, fabric softener, little speciality bags for baby laundry so it wouldnt mix in with the other laundry (baby socks get lost alot)and a baby laundry basket. I also got a mom gift of all Lavender scented things. It felt good to get a mom gift. You could also give a gift certificate for food or the store she shops at most. Diapers are always a welcome gift.

My best friend got me the world's best thing for a new mommy. It's a medicine dispenser with a nipple on it. It works so much better than droppers! If I have to give my son medicine that he can have when he eats, I start him off with his bottle, do the old switcheroo with the medicine, let him finish the medicine, then switch back to his bottle. It works like a charm. They can be found at Wal-Mart and Target. Tell your mom good luck and congratulations!
