If a business is easy to set up, then a lot of people will set one up and there will be a lot of competition, which in turn, leaves little room for profit.

Well,
the reason why everyone else is making money off of them and you aren't is quite simple really. They either have an established site, or, they are actually marketing.
A lot of people think, ok, I'll dropship and do some ebaying, or whatever. The problem is, people on ebay already know how to look for a deal, and they can probably figure out how to get the same "wholesale" (yeah right, wholesale) deal that you got to drop ship.
Investing in your own company rather than the drop shipping is the way to go.
Here are some tips on combining your own website with drop shipping that you may find useful.
Pick one item type to sell. If you are selling makeup, don't throw in a fishing knife. Become known for your makeup.
Use your website to help drive traffic to you, simply by adding content along with the shopping cart. Write articles on your site about applying make up, and write a new one each week. Of course, I am using make up as an example.
You can use ebay as a way of driving business to your site as well.
Turn off one item on your website's shopping cart and then sell 1 or 2 of that item on ebay, providing a link to your website as well. This will drive traffic, and best of all, targeted traffic. At the end of the auction, you can turn the product back on.
So what if it should be a 10 dollar item and it sells for only 2 dollars, you just invested only 8 dollars in some highly targeted traffic.
Provide a Question and Answer section on your website that the public can view the answers to.
Search through yahoo answers and find questions that are directly related to your product, then, use that question as a jumping point for one of your articles that you write.
Marketing yourself online is all well and good, but, I will tell you that nothing is better than real world marketing. Buy some of your products at your price and then sell them at a local craft show or festivle. Provide a business card with your website in each package so that people know where to get more.
Market your website in small newspaper ads, many people still read those, especially older folks.
Send out flyers to major cities in the USA

You have to think of your online business just as you would any other business. Buy a book or two on marketing, so that you can learn how to market in the real world too.
Brand yourself. Come up with a real business name and register that business in your county. This way, you can work on logos and other stuff.

If you think this is something that you would want to sell, scroll down to the bottom and click "business oppertunity", all the way in the footer of the page. It is totally FREE and reliable if you actually sell the products.
Quit getting involved in "traffic building" and "email blasting" scams that require you to click on links all day. It's a waste of your time, and the only traffic that is being driven to your site is those people who are doing the same thing that you are doing.
Ask yourself the following questions.
Do you buy something that you read about in your spam box or email box when you don't know the source?
Do you buy anything from sites that come as a popup with another site?
If you answered no to these questions, then why would you expect others to do it? Stay clear of these gimmics.

I've been using Dropship.com for some time.
It works good for me...
I've started with no monthly fees, and now i'm thinking to upgrade to get lower prices (higher profit)
But what works for one might not for another....
