What do you think an appropriate gift would be for Christmas? He doesn't like it when I get him stuff (for his birthday I got him a giftcard to Starbucks) but I think he's great and like to show him I appreciate him. Any suggestions?

Just a few more details: We are a small company and work for NFL Hall of Famers so we all already get hooked up with sport events.

He travels a lot for work, he loves to ski, and he is Jewish. Hope this helps a little.

First we will need more information on what he likes, or at least what type of guy he is.

I would say season tickets to his favorite sports team. If that seems like to much, a 100 $ certificate to his favorite store.

Or find out what his office is missing, a coffee maker, Microwave, a good desk chair.

Now this is my best Idea, go to a trophy shop, and have them make you a best boss award, and give it to him, with the gift card, to keep it from looking like you are trying to sleep with the boss, get a few other people in on it. I hope this helps.

If he doesn't like it when you buy him stuff, he probably feels uncomfortable with the idea of accepting something from someone who (presumably) makes less money than he does. Buying a gift for the boss can be tricky; you want to show your appreciation, but you don't want to spend lots of money or look like you're "sucking up."

A small token of your appreciation is fine. I usually spend no more than $10 on my bosses. One of them gets some sort of peanut butter candy (he loves peanut butter/chocolate) and one gets Super Hero stuff. (He's a collector.) Last year he got a Superman journal he seemed to really like.

I would recommend a small but tasteful food item (skip the Russell Stover--super-tacky. But if you go into a gourmet shop, you should be able to find a small, tasteful box of truffles or marzipan.)

Other ideas:
A fun desk calendar (I especially like the one by Cranium--everyone can have fun with it) http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?z=y&EAN=9780761146872&itm=1

A small package of Starbucks coffee (if he makes his own) and a nice card.

Go to a bakery and pick up some fresh cookies that can be shared with everyone.

You said he didn't like the Starbucks giftcard. If you have to get something, I'd just get a simple greeting card (nothing sentimental or humorous, just a simple Season's Greetings sort of wish) and write a simple message like "Thank you for being a great boss." That way it remains professional and gets the point across that you appreciate him.

Kimpenn09's answer was great.
I AM the boss, and although we never expect a gift, it is nice to know you are well liked.

Gift cards are always neat... perhaps a restaurant?
