My friends and I decided to rent an apartment. We saw one we liked and the caretaker said we have to pay a reservation fee so they won't entertain possible tenants anymore... which we did. When we're about to settle the arrangements a few days later, they suddenly changed the conditions on the contract , thus making us back out. We asked for the money to be returned but they wouldn't saying it's "earnest money" meaning it's not refundable regardless of whether or not we push thru with the rent. Can we still get the money back? And how?

Absolutely, take em' to small claims court and get your $'s back. Be sure to save every document and bring it with you to court. You need to show they changed the contract during mid-stream. Also, ask for court costs when you file.
