Having Gas Pains

It depends on the cause. Most stop swallowing a lot of air once they switch from bottles to cups.

If your baby cries more than three hours a day due to gas pains, that is a sign of colic, which can be caused by an allergy, intolerance, or anxiety. I'd talk to your child's pediatrician if the problem is not controllable with Simethicone Drops, which are made to relieve tummy gas. Make sure you read all warnings and directions before using it.

Another solution I've heard a lot about is giving your child yogurt, if he/she is old enough or acidophilus drops if he/she isn't. The bacteria seem to support the body's digestive system in a positive way, eliminating much of the tummy gas he/she would normally experience. Acidophilus drops can be purchased at health food stores.

Unfortunately, it's when their digestive track becomes more mature. There are many things you can do to help them get through it though. If your baby is formula fed, try a different formula. If you are breastfeeding try eliminating foods that could upset the baby's stomach (dairy, etc.). Try holding the baby in different positions to put pressure on their belly to help expell the gas. Use Mylicon gas drops. Burb the baby often during feedings. Feed the baby more upright rather than laying down. Good luck :)

Ok, let's review. He is ONE WEEK old an already, he has been on THREE different forms of nutrition. No wonder he is in pain. STOP THE SOY FORMULA...that is a MAJOR cause of constipation. Go back to the Enfamil Newborn. I cannot believe you actually thought that one day of formula was enough to see anything. Soy formula is NUTRITIONALLY INFERIOR. You can use gas drops (why are you withholding them? they are only made of a little sodium), but you also need to consider the bottles you are using and how often you are burping him.

There's no exact time all babies are different.
Some babies are harder to burp than others, I could never burp my son the traditional way by patting him on the back. With him I usually had to shake him a little (not roughly - can we all say shaken baby syndrome?), I used to hold him upright, supporting his head carefully and give him a little shake, if that didn't work, I danced around with him carefully held in my arms.

my daughter was colicy for 5 months and I had to bang her back so hard to burp her. My son, however, I only burped from week 4-6. Other than that 2 week period I have never burped him. He doesn't have a gas problem. He will just burp naturally or fart when he has gas and only occassionally will he fuss abit before a burp

If you can imagine you are just born and suddenly you have to feed through your mouth and all these organs are begining to function now alone. Therefore there will be some teething problems. Babies normally begin to settle at around it weeks unless there is some other underlying condition. I have 5 children and have been there with all 5.

the reason the baby could be having all that gas is due to the bottle that you are using. talk to your pediatrician, they can recommend a type that will help with that.

I think it will go away around 3 months. My daughter is almost 3 months, and she has it a little but not as bad as before.
